Wagner feted at dinner Elected to top directorship at
Rotary
By Lois McFarland Special for the Scottsdale Republic Dec. 14, 2002
SCOTTSDALE - Rotarian Rodger Wagner and his wife,
Peg, are looking forward to the next two years when they'll
be packing their bags for such far-off places as Brisbane,
Australia, and Osaka, Japan.
In 2003, he will be installed "director elect" of
Rotary International in Brisbane, and in 2004 he will take office in
Osaka.
A dinner honoring the Wagners and his election to the
top Rotary International directorship was held last weekend at the
Paradise Valley Country Club.
Dinner hosts were Greg Podd, incoming Rotary
District 5510 governor, and his wife, Pam, of Scottsdale, and
immediate past district governor Barbara Feder and her
husband, Abe, of Mesa.
Rodger will be representing Rotary as one of the six
international directors from the United States and one of 17
overall. He also has the distinction of being the first Arizona
Rotarian in 68 years to fill the top position. The last was Karl
Barfield of Tucson, who was appointed in 1934, not elected.
"I've known Rodger for many, many years," said
incoming governor Podd. "He's an incredible man and well-deserving
of this position. There are only 17 directors elected every two
years from out of 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. He's going to be
a wonderful director, and we're looking forward to it."
Wagner is responsible as an international officer to
represent 68,000 Rotarians in Zones 25 and 26, including parts of
Texas and Minnesota as well as New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Idaho,
North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas and Arizona.
The new director, who served as president of
Scottsdale Rotary Club in 1985 and District 5510 governor in 1990,
is known for his resourcefulness in getting goods shipped to needy
countries around the world. Wagner says that Rotary clubs in Russia
are making strides in teaching the people about the free enterprise
system.
The Wagners, owners of Wagner Realty and Property
Management, lived in Scottsdale from 1967 until four years ago, when
they moved to Fountain Hills. |
